Mastodon Golf Club
About
Situated midway between Hebron and Newark, Mastodon Golf Club (formerly known as Burning Tree Golf Course) is an 18-hole layout whose location has unique historical significance. In 1989 while digging a new pond for the course, a crewmember discovered fossils of the extinct American Mastodon. Although the original skeleton resides in Japan, the course is home to a full-sized replica as well as over 150 other replicas of both dinosaurs and Ice Age mammals. The museum-quality replicas make the golf course a fun place for families. In addition to the natural history lesson it offers, the course also provides a relaxing round that players of any skill level will enjoy. The regulation-length course has a classic layout that is both accessible and a fair challenge. The affordable rates make Burning Tree even more appealing.

Simple Layout
Layout was simple allowing much easier holes. Course had many spots with standing water. Course was well groomed. Greens were quite slow. Water features were a nice addition to the relatively flat course. Pace was quick and easy to get a round in under 3 hours.
Much improved
The greens were in great shape and fairways were as to be expected with all the rain. Less Canadian geese than previous years which is a good thing. Clubhouse badly needs updates in rest rooms. Carts were in good shape. This is a very tight back nine and if I hadn’t played the course before, rather confusing, but they are working on their signage.
Stocky
Greens were really nice, fairways were dry and hard and ball rolled, tees were okay. Day was extremely windy m sunny and cool. some holes were difficult to find tees. Really enjoyable to play and had some fun fairway difficulties.
Wonderful Undulating and Built-Up Greens
This is a course I would like to know more about. Course is listed as being done by Larry Packard; however, I find know attribution to him on all of his course lists. However, several of the greens feel like / look like ones he would design. Several of the greens on the back 9 are wild and must be seen in person to be believed ( like 13 and 16).
The course conditions were not good from the tees to the fairways, but the greens were in great shape.
Worth a play if in the area.
First time
As we started out I was a little worried. We had a Monday 8:00am tee time. Arrived about 7:40am. Not a car in the parking lot and not a light on in the club house. At 8:04am called the main number which gave three ways to contact them which was nice. I texted the number provided and the response was he was running late due to a crash. Once he arrived he was slightly apologetic, but nice. He got us checked in and we teed off about 8:30am. Since there was no one else there this was not an issue, but if there were other groups it may be made a mess. Other than that it was a great time. Other staff members who were working (specifically a man who was working on the course who said he’s played that course since the 70s was great. What a nice guy!). The course hole layout was a bit hard, but this guy helped us out. Overall a very nice day. Thanks and I will be back.
Great place to be.
Wonderful experience. Awesome place to relax and enjoy golf.
Also much much more to do than just golfing . There are many pub style games to do after your round. Leagues are also always a great time with friends during winter months. Thanks to all the amazing staff I will be continously coming back.
Average. Fine
Course layout very hard to figure out and way finding was non existent. Staff friendly, slightly overpriced. Hard to pay over 30 to play 18
Greens are incredible.
Tee boxes and fairways need some love.
But the groundskeepers are working all day on the course so it won’t take long. Staff is very friendly and the place is kept clean.
Greens- roll true and are wild to play on (in a good way).
Course has great character & what will keep me coming back will be the the greens.
Great staff and a great course
Great new staff and a great new layout to the course. The course was beautiful and played amazing! I would recommend
Great New Ownership!!
With the new ownership, you can tell Al plans to do great things here at this course. Greens are way better than before and the dedication put in you can tell the grounds are in better shape. Loved my time there and will go back. I recommend this course for everyone. Plus the beer is always cold lol...
Nice course
Clearly they are working hard to improve this course and just nice people!
